fabulous fabulous new site launched ... HER NOISE
Launch of the new website HER NOISE
Her Noise Archive is a resource of collected materials investigating music and sound histories in relation to gender, bringing together a wide network of women artists who use sound as a medium.
Whilst Her Noise exists as a physical archive, key elements of the original project, including video interviews with a number of artists and musicians, are available on this site, as well as documentation of more recent events and responses including 'Her Noise: `feminisms and the Sonic' at Tate Modern and 'Sound:Gender:Feminism:Activism' at LCC earlier in 2012.
The site will also see a series of guest ‘curations’ over the course of the next few years, whereby people have been asked to make selections from and for the archive, in an effort to keep the archive alive.
The first curations that are available on the site are from:

Nina Power - philosopher, writer and broadcaster
Tara Rodgers - musician, composer and feminist technology scholar

Anywhere but here is an exhibition that brings together 3 video works by Ruth Proctor, Hiroko Okada and A.K. Burns + A.L. Steiner. Marianne Templeton (London), Emily Wakeling (Tokyo) and Jemima Wyman (Los Angeles), are artists and curators who have personal connections with Brisbane, and each have chosen one work from her locale that has relevance to contemporary feminisms.
Marianne Templeton completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) at Queensland University of Technology in 2006. She is an artist, arts writer, and founding member of Boxcopy. Marianne has exhibited internationally and currently lives and works in London, as the Gallery Manager at Work Gallery. Emily Wakeling is a freelance art writer and curator based in Tokyo. She holds a Masters degree in Art History from the University of Queensland. Jemima Wyman is an artist who lives and works between Brisbane and Los Angeles. Wyman completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (in Visual Arts) with Honours at the Queensland University of Technology. In 2007, she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from The California Institute of Arts in Los Angeles. She has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally. In 2005 she formed CamLab, a collaboration with Anna Mayer.

GIRRL [girrlsound : digitalgirrl] supports the development and promotion of new work by women in the sonic and digital arts. GIRRL works to provide discussion, networking, and exhibition spaces to initiate collaborations and offer support to women making, curating, reviewing, theorising, and working in the digital and sonic arts.
Our final public program of the year includes four dynamic sound and digital artists - Heidi Millington, Antonia Zappia, Amber Hansen and Michelle Xen. They will present some of t
heir work and discuss their creative practice.
Speaker bios
Michelle Xen is an Australian visual/sound artist, musician, and performer. Her practice synthesizes elements of colour, dynamic, timbre, volume, and field to create emotional and visceral installations, videos, songs and sound works. Through this practice, the persona of the female pop musician is dismantled and reconstructed through the histories of experimental art performance, pop music, and art installation practices. Her practice forms relationships between contemporary art practice, pop music and contemporary performance creating a generative questioning of how we assimilate and balance cultural outputs. Xen has collaborated extensively across creative disciplines and toured internationally as a DJ and vocalist/producer.
Heidi Millington (Rose Carrousel) is a musician and an environmental scientist. She mixes whimsical vocals and unguarded stories with acoustic instruments and shimmery, glitchy electronica to make hand-made, beautiful folktronica and lo-fi electro. She has performed and released internationally and been highly commended in the Queensland Song of the Year (2012). Merging art and science, she is developing a light-sensitive "Nature Synth" for investigating how people engage with voice and the sounds of nature.
Antonia Zappia is a contemporary composer and sound engineer based in Brisbane, Queensland. Her creative practice encompasses classical, contemporary classical, popular music and sound art. In developing her compositional voice, Antonia spent three years collaborating with contemporary dancers, choreographers, filmmakers and visual artists. In 2011, she was one of the classical finalists in the APRA Professional Development Awards and completed an Honours degree in Music Technology at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Her dissertation, entitled Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Effective Traits of a Creative Partnership, was informed by research of 20th century and current creative partnerships.
Amber Hansen is a multidisciplinary composer, producer, performer, researcher and teacher. Her creative practice embodies and expresses her experiences and perceptions as a woman of mixed cultural ancestry, influenced and inspired by the multicultural, urban, indigenous and natural landscapes that she was raised in, has travelled to and that surround her. The diverse cultural, social, political, spiritual and creative facets of her past and present inform and influence her practice, realised by utilising diverse artistic mediums such as electro-acoustic composition; traditional, contemporary and oriental Arabic and Middle Eastern music and dance; live performance art; installation; remixing; film and other visual media.

GIRRL is so very happy to announce our new podcasts CAT CINDERELLA Radio Mag, curated and hosted by Barbara De Dominicis are now up and running and they are fantastic!
Launched as the podcast/sonic backdrop of GIRRL SOUND to become a web radio magazine for female-artists from all over the world to publish their work, The Cat Cinderella* features a new podcast-episode bimonthly with works by women artists who investigate sound as a distinctive element in their research. We are mainly focused on sound at the border between art_music and hybrid audio collages and aim to provide a space to encourage works created by women in the name of experimentation and authenticity. We do welcome works by women of any ethnic, cultural and educational backgrounds devoted to sound art, audio documentary, field recording, performance, radio theatre, audio portray, sound postcards, sound poetry, visual arts as well as electroacoustics and any other free- forms explorations in the aural and visual realms

other audio oddities. In particular, I am looking for the unique. There will be
no compensation for these submissions but hopefully some satisfaction in

Brooke Ferguson is a Brisbane based artist. Ferguson completed her Bachelor of Fine Art (in Visual Art) with Honours at the Queensland University of Technology in 2011. Working across different media, recent projects take the form of drawings, installation, sound and collaboration. Her process-based practice reflects a continued interest in simple materials, activities and gestures to generate potential artworks. Marcel Duchamp’s concept of Infra-mince, with its concern for incidental phenomenon and unquantifiable boundaries, provides a model for Ferguson’s approach to media.
Brooke has been active in Brisbane’s Artist-Run Initiative scene, having exhibited with No Frills*, inbetweenspaces and Boxcopy. She is Metro Arts 2011 Artist in Residence.

Eve Roleston is a Gold Coast based artist whose work explores and links her multifaceted identity with the physical and perceptual world. Wanted: Australian Female Composers for Online Survey
Australian female composers in their early-mid career are invited to participate in an online survey before 31 October, 2011.
This research project aims to contribute to the visibility of the current generation of emerging women composers in Australia by giving voice to their experiences and promoting discussion on their needs in the twenty-first century. The research being undertaken in this project forms part of the academic component of a Masters of Music program.

"...This interest comes from sound in itself and then from being interested in humans and their lives, histories, conditions etc. But we also wanted to go beyond the object and to not objectify and we came across audio as being, in the context of visual arts, in a certain way less, or differently, objectifying than the photograph or the video image; and also for its sculptural and material, or immaterial, qualities; of travelling through space instead of being fixed in its place, or just having one line of projection like video, for example, whose image has a more fixed format. We have been working with sound for a long time: sound was part of the environments we did during the first years of our collaboration; then we used it as a means of intervention in public space. We usually used concrete sound in relationship with space, as a way of shaping it or intervene in it, more than as a narrative element..."

Room40's Open Frame festival continues its annual survey of esoteric music and media arts.
In 2011, Open Frame welcomes one of the true icons of 21st Century sound art - New York's Marina Rosenfeld. Known for epic performance works and highly personalised sound situations, she has presented works at the Tate Modern, NYMOMA and countless festivals. We've managed to score her ONLY east coast performance and she will be delivering a trademark solo turntable work, composed for her own specially cut dubplates.
We also play host to a special entourage from Tokyo including the legendary melodic minimalists Minamo, 12K post-pop artist Moskitoo and the highly regarded Fourcolor whose new album 'As Pleat' has been heralded as "mesmerising and unique", by Fluid Radio in the UK.
Following epic successes in Europe and an ever growing array of acclaimed releases Our Love Will Destroy The World arrives in Brisbane for the very first time promising to deliver a massive wash of tectonic tones and savage harmony. Australian audio-visualist Scott Morrison also hits Open Frame to launch his new dvd edition 'Ballads For Quiet Horizons', featuring a collection of his individual landscape deconstructions.
